In December 1996, the Constitutional Court, ordered the Minister of Telecoms to end the PTC monopoly for a second time. They gave her six weeks to run a tender process and select an operator, or simply allow Econet to start operating. Whilst many people, expected her to let us operate since we already had a system, and had been fighting for nearly 5 years, I knew through my network of sympathisers that a massive conspiracy, was being hatched, to try and thwart us, once and for all.

The Minister set up a Technical Committee (TC), and within 2 weeks, they published a public tender. Whilst many people wondered how they had managed such an extraordinary feat, in such a short time frame. It would all be revealed spectacularly, in another court battle!

We submitted a tender response, along with five other companies. Exactly 4 weeks later, on 28th February 1997, the Minister announced that another company had won the tender, and was immediately issued the license. They announced that we had come fourth, out of five bidders, even though we had a working system, on the ground!

The following day, the Minister announced that they had complied fully with the order of the court and she also directed that I be arrested for illegal possession of telecommunications equipment.

The headline of one of the newspapers read:

“Masiyiwa’s Dream Crumbles”

That morning, I received a very interesting visitor…

“…The Lord has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet…”
(Nahum1:3).

To be continued…

Afterthought 1

The people who kept me informed about what was happening, were not usually big and influential people, but ordinary Christians, who worked as cleaners, tea makers in offices, security officers, and secretaries in government offices, and people’s homes. It was totally remarkable, who The Lord moved all these people, to inform and encourage me. Never, never forget that God works through people.

Afterthought 2

Joshua 3:13-16
“And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap.
…….And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,) That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan:and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off:and the people passed over right against Jericho.”
…”Go stand in the river… You are not going under, because the waters have been stopped at Adam. You are not going under, but you are going over, by faith.”
Bishop Joseph Garlington.

Afterthought 3

I was never disappointed or discouraged, or bitter. I was never anxious or worried. I did not lose my apatite or my sleep. There was never any anguish, or pain. You do not experience such emotions when you are operating by faith. I was never bothered by the oppositions, or those who opposed us. Many times I prayed for them. The bible says, “we fight not flesh and blood”. When we eventually prevailed (3 more posts), I recovered everything!

Afterthought 4

In Africa, many people believe success in business, depends on who you are “connected to, at the top”. This view is held widely, throughout the continent, and I have seen it again, and again.
For a Christian, this should never be the case, and if you believe this, you need to transform your mindset, if you want God to bless, what you are doing. 1John1:3, says in part:
“Truly our fellowship, is with the Father and His Son.”…
If you have been feeling frustrated, that you do not have any influential connections, at the top, who can make things happen for you, contemplate on what this verse is actually saying:
“Our own connections, are at the very top: with the Father and His Son Jesus Christ”…. Wow, wow!
Over the years, I have put this into practice, in a remarkable way. This is one of my “pillar scriptures”.
Recently, a former Head of State, of a country, in which we have a business, made this comment, about me, “in all the time, I was in office, this guy never asked me to help him. He would come and see me, about how to improve things like education, health and so forth in our country, but he never discussed with me, his business, if I did not ask him.”
