Justin Stanford: Got An Idea? Be Bold, Start Early

DOLA ADESANYA

Justin Stanford is, at the age of 29, one of South Africa’s leading entrepreneurs and venture investors. His specialist areas are in technology and  innovative thinking!

At age 13, Justin’s started his first business by selling apple juice to his classmates. A few years later Justin decided to “depart high-school early” (dropped out off high school) and made his own way to the top by starting his first company at 18.

Inspired by Bill Gates, Justin  set out to launch an internet security company. The internet security company flopped. His next business endeavour after that also failed. Justin however was not deterred, for several years,he forged on and went on to successfully launch and grow his 100%-Internet based company from a garage in the suburbs of Cape Town, using a desktop computer, phone and an old 166Mhz PC as a FreeBSD-based server on the floor.

Justin came across ESET a genius piece of anti-virus software that propelled him to where he is today. He became the exclusive distributor for the ESET product in South Africa and his brand, ESET Southern Africa sells the ESET’s range of internet security products in about 20 sub-Saharan countries. Today, Justin’s ESET brand records over $10 million in annual turnover and controls 5% of the anti-virus market in Southern Africa.

It is worth mentioning that Justin has already captured the attention of business leaders such as Johann Rupert. In late 2008, Justin, got R8m in venture capital from the billionaire investor. Also noteworthy to add that, in 2011, Justin was listed in the Mail & Guardian ‘Top 200 Young South Africans’ for the year. Commendably, in 2012, he was listed in ‘Ten Young African Millionaires to Watch’ by Forbes.

In one of his interview, when asked what qualities helped achieved such incredible success. Justin replied saying “What got me to my real beginning, without a doubt, was just perseverance”. “You also need to be a good observer and a good listener. I spent a lot of time listening to what much older and much wiser business people had to say. I still do it today.”

Justin is today the co-founder and CEO of diversified holding company 4D Innovations Group (4Di Group) – a holding and investment management company headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa, comprising various brands, companies and investments.
