I decided to title this entry with the lyrics to one of, if not my favourite songs of all time, Eminem’s Lose Yourself because I felt that it was very appropriate for this piece. Call me silly, but I am of the belief that opportunities are always around us and to realise our ideas, we must seize hold of every opportunity available to us and where there isn’t one, make one up. I will use myself as an instance (as much as I hate doing so). I am a creative person. My favourite thing is to sit down and turn something out of basically nothing and where there is something, find a way to extract something else. I realized one day that one can only say he is a creative person when he is actually creating something and not sitting down in his room with imaginations (as I always love to do). This is because AN IDEA IS JUST AN IDEA WITHOUT AN OPPORTUNITY TO REALISE THAT IDEA. So, seeing as I was still in university, I did what any university person does, I joined societies (university clubs, basically). These have given me platforms or in this context, OPPORTUNITIES to fully express my ideas and turn them into realities and that is an excellent way to meet like-minded people and get contacts.
Every other person we have ever spoken about on this blog or we will ever speak about either took hold of an opportunity or made one up for him or herself. Plus, with the Internet now, there are a plethora of ways by which one can realise his ideas and get him or herself out there. I heard the other day (not very sure how truthful this is) that if your videos on YouTube have a lot of hits, YouTube begins to pay you money. Issa Rae, for instance, who we have profiled, used YouTube as a platform to launch herself. Ryan Seacrest, whose day job is hosting and talking, seized the platform at E! and has now become a media mogul at his tender age of 36.
Even it is small at first, well you have to start from somewhere. Plus, frankly, it makes for a way better story to say “ Oh yes, I recall when I started my company from my dorm room in university from an idea that had always pondered in my head”. Frankly, my mum has told me (and you know what they say about mothers knowing best), that no one is going to invest in you, if you have nothing to show or as I like to put it “ BEFORE SOMEONE INVESTS IN YOU, YOU HAVE TO INVEST IN YOURSELF”
So, again in closing, I leave you with the kind words of Eminem (who by the way won an Academy Award for this song, so you know those lyrics are something)
